My take: Email is a low-bandwidth tool best used to diffuse responsibility.

I wonder just how much of the problem is time spent culling through unwanted email or SPAM?

Tons, the signal to noise ratio in email is unbelievably high. Inbox Zero is one good strategy for dealing with it.
The best solution I’ve come up with is to ignore people’s emails. In my experience a majority (honestly, I really do mean more than 50%) of the email I was getting was questions that people could (and would) answer by themselves if the option to come to me first wasn’t available. There’s a learning curve (you have to be diligent about not answering questions and they have to come to terms with the idea that you aren’t mad at them because you didn’t reply…) but after a month or two the email flow drops off and all is well. I get a lot less email than I used to, and I love it!
Also, .Mac alias accounts rule – I use them for online transactions and also (with the exception of this weblog) blog commenting, and I never have to see the onslaught of spam that I’ve invited. Speaking of which, as someone who uses every single .Mac service available, MobileMe looks like it’s going to be the best thing ever.

MobileMe looks really interesting — but I really like the things Google Apps does for me (spam filtering / “unlimited” storage / costs nothing / etc). How’s the current gen .Mac’s spam filtering?
